Yos Sudarso Bay
The bay in front of the city centre is deep and sheltered. Its irregular shoreline gives the map a strong outline of coves, headlands and piers.

Jayapura Map Poster & Print
Jayapura is the capital of Papua, in the far east of Indonesia, close to the border with Papua New Guinea. The city occupies a series of narrow coastal strips and small valleys around Yos Sudarso Bay, which opens onto the Pacific. Steep, forested hills rise almost immediately behind the waterfront, so the built-up area follows the shoreline wherever there is level ground.
Under Dutch administration the town was called Hollandia. During the Second World War it became a major Allied base after American forces landed here in 1944, and General Douglas MacArthur briefly set up his headquarters in the hills nearby. Today the city's districts are spread along several bays and inlets, connected by coastal roads.
A Jayapura map poster shows a city shaped by terrain more than by planning. Streets thread between hills and water, and the arched Youtefa Bridge crosses the mouth of Youtefa Bay. The Cyclops Mountains separate the coast from Lake Sentani and the airport to the west. The result is a delicate composition of fragments held together by the sea.

Youtefa Bridge
An arched bridge opened in 2019 across Youtefa Bay. It links parts of the city and shortens the route toward the border region to the east.
Cyclops Mountains
The steep range behind the city leaves blank, rugged space on the map and holds the built-up area to a narrow band along the coast.
