Kadena Air Base

Okinawa Map Poster & Print
Okinawa City sits in the central part of Okinawa Island, north of Naha. It was formed in 1974 by merging the city of Koza with the neighbouring village of Misato, and many locals still use the old name Koza for its central districts. The city lies mostly inland but reaches the east coast at Awase, on Nakagusuku Bay.
A large part of the map on the western side is taken up by Kadena Air Base, whose runways and open ground form a sharp, mostly empty shape against the dense town. Near the base, Gate 2 Street and the surrounding lanes developed as a commercial district serving American personnel, and the area became known for its live music scene.
The city also hosts one of the island's best-known Eisa festivals, bringing drum dance groups from across Okinawa. An Okinawa map poster shows the town's irregular streets over low hills, the straight edges of the base and the eastern shoreline, a layout shaped by postwar history as much as by the land.

Gate 2 Street
Running from the base toward central Koza, this street and its side lanes form the commercial core that gave the city its postwar character and music scene.
Awase coast
On the eastern side, the city reaches the shore of Nakagusuku Bay, where the coastline gives the map a clean edge against the water.

Waarom Okinawa
Een kaart met betekenis
Okinawa City is home to long-standing local communities and to many people connected with the bases, some for a few years, some for decades. A map of Koza's streets is a clear, understated way to remember time on the island.
