Orihuela lies in the Vega Baja del Segura in the south of the Valencian region. The historic town is squeezed between two strong features: the Segura River, which curves through the centre, and the Sierra de Orihuela, a bare rocky ridge that rises directly behind it. From above, the old streets are packed into this narrow strip of land.
Around the town, the fertile plain of the Segura is divided into small irrigated plots and crossed by old irrigation channels. The Palmeral, one of the largest palm groves in Europe, lies at the foot of the mountain. On the Orihuela map poster the dense old town, the river, the ridge and the patchwork of fields fit together clearly.
The town has a cathedral and many churches and convents, and it was an important religious and university centre for centuries. It is also the birthplace of the poet Miguel Hernández. The municipality extends to a separate coastal area, Orihuela Costa, but the historic town sits inland on the river.
