Passo Fundo Map Poster & Print
Passo Fundo lies on the Planalto Médio, the upland plateau of northern Rio Grande do Sul, and its map reflects that open, rolling ground. The centre follows a largely regular street grid, with blocks laid out in tidy rows and a main avenue running through the heart of the city. Beyond the core, newer districts extend outward along the roads that lead across the plateau.
The Passo Fundo river winds through the urban area, giving its name to the city and breaking the grid with a softer line. The city grew as a crossroads, first on routes used by drovers moving cattle and later as a railway junction, which explains the way roads converge on the centre from several directions.
Today it is a regional centre for agriculture, health care and education, and it is known in Brazil for its long-running literary festival, which earned it the title of national capital of literature. A Passo Fundo map poster shows a city built on connections, both of roads and of ideas, laid out on open high ground.

Passo Fundo river
A modest river curving through the city, giving Passo Fundo its name, which means deep ford, and adding a gentle diagonal to the composition.
Converging highways
Main roads arrive from several directions and meet near the centre, a pattern inherited from the city's past as a stopping point for travellers crossing the plateau.
