Salsette Map Poster & Print
Salsette is the island on which most of Mumbai is built. Over time it was joined by land reclamation to the smaller islands of old Bombay at its southern end. Creeks bound it: Vasai Creek to the north, Thane Creek to the east and the Arabian Sea to the west. From above, it forms a large, irregular block of land, dense with streets almost everywhere.
The great exception is the centre-north. There, Sanjay Gandhi National Park covers a wide area of forested hills, and Vihar, Tulsi and Powai lakes lie in or near it. The park also contains the Kanheri Caves, a complex of ancient Buddhist rock-cut caves. Around this green core, Mumbai's suburbs spread out in a very dense grid, crossed by railway lines running north to south.

Powai, Vihar and Tulsi lakes sit in and around the park. Their irregular shapes are clearly visible, with the densely built suburbs pressing up against their shores.
Creek boundaries
Thane Creek and Vasai Creek, with their mangrove-lined edges, form the island's eastern and northern limits. They define the island's shape more clearly than any road.
