Samosir Island Map Poster & Print
Samosir sits in the middle of Lake Toba in North Sumatra, an island within an island, surrounded by the water of a vast volcanic caldera. On the western side, only a narrow channel at Pangururan separates it from the Sumatran mainland; the channel was cut across what was once an isthmus. The island's outline is broad and slightly irregular, with a hilly upland interior.
Lake Toba formed after a supervolcanic eruption roughly 74,000 years ago, one of the largest known in the geological record, and Samosir later rose from the caldera floor. The island is the heartland of the Batak Toba people. Their traditional houses with saddle-shaped roofs, their stone tombs and old village sites are found along its shores.
A Samosir Island map poster places the island at the centre and lets the lake frame it, with the caldera shore visible at the edges in wider views. Villages and roads cluster along the coast, especially on the eastern side around Tuktuk and Tomok, while the interior stays open. The composition is water within land within water.

Pangururan channel
On the western side, a narrow channel separates Samosir from the Sumatran shore at Pangururan, the island's main town. On the map it is a thin thread of water between two landmasses.
Lake Toba caldera
The lake surrounds the island on every side and is itself enclosed by the steep caldera walls. A wider frame gives the map a strong, nested structure.

Waarom Samosir Island
Een kaart met betekenis
Travellers often remember Samosir as a pause: days by the lake with little to do but look across the water. For Batak families it is ancestral ground. A map holds both meanings with care, drawing the shape of the island without turning it into a postcard.
Write a family name, a village or a travel date into the title and subtitle, and set the coordinates line as you wish. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. A printed matte poster, with an optional wooden frame, can be shipped from print partners in more than 30 countries.
