On a map the city reads as a dense core around its cathedral and municipal buildings, with streets spreading outward along the main roads. The San Fernando River curves through the area, and the pattern of barangays around the centre fills in with irregular blocks and lanes.
The expressway to the north passes along the city's edge, its long straight lines contrasting with the older, more organic streets near the centre. The former railway station, remembered as a stop on the route of the Bataan Death March, sits within this older fabric.
