Tanjia lies in the mountainous northeast of Chongqing municipality, a region of steep hills, narrow valleys and terraced slopes. In landscapes like this, the terrain shapes almost everything. Roads follow valley floors and switch back up hillsides, and buildings gather wherever the ground is flat enough to build on.
On a map this gives the town a long, uneven shape instead of a grid. The main streets run along the valley, and shorter lanes climb away from them and end quickly where the slopes steepen. Outside the built-up area, winding rural roads trace the contours of the hills and link small villages and farmland on terraces.
