Tortona lies in southeastern Piedmont, in the province of Alessandria, where the Scrivia valley opens onto the Po plain. The town was the Roman Dertona, and parts of its centre still follow the ancient layout. Above it rises a hill that once carried the castle, now a public park.
The historic centre is compact, with the cathedral and main squares close together and streets running in a regular pattern. Outside it, later neighbourhoods spread across the plain toward the river and the railway. Tortona is also closely tied to cyclist Fausto Coppi, born nearby, who died in the town in 1960.
