Voghera lies in the province of Pavia, where the flat Po plain meets the first hills of the Oltrepò Pavese. The historic centre is a compact core of streets around the cathedral of San Lorenzo, with later neighbourhoods spreading outward in a more regular pattern. The Staffora river runs past the eastern side of town on its way north toward the Po.
The town has long been an important railway junction, where lines toward Milan, Turin, Genoa and Piacenza meet, and the tracks and yards form a strong band on the map. The Castello Visconteo, a square medieval fortress, stands by the old centre. In Italian, the phrase la casalinga di Voghera, the housewife of Voghera, became shorthand for the ordinary reader or voter.
