Straight plain roads
With no hills to steer them, the main roads run in long, direct lines between settlements, and they form the strongest strokes on the map.

De kaart
Yaoji Map Poster & Print
Yaoji lies southeast of Xuzhou in the far north of Jiangsu, on the broad lowland that stretches toward Shandong and Anhui. There is almost no relief here, so the map is shaped by human geometry: roads laid out in straight runs, a compact town centre, and villages scattered at regular intervals across the surrounding farmland.
The plain has been farmed for a very long time, and the result is visible from above as a patchwork of rectangular plots divided by ditches and field lanes. Around the town these thin lines are dense and consistent, which gives a map of Yaoji an unexpectedly graphic, almost textile quality when it is printed large.
A Yaoji map poster works best at a scale that shows both the town and its countryside. The centre appears as a tight cluster of blocks, and around it the fields and village roads repeat outward in a pattern that is calm, orderly and very characteristic of this corner of eastern China.

Field lane pattern
Narrow lanes and ditches split the farmland into regular strips, producing a fine hatching around the town that looks almost drawn by hand on a printed map.
Compact town core
Shops, homes and public buildings gather in a tight core, a darker cluster of blocks that anchors the open grid of the surrounding countryside.

Waarom Yaoji
Een kaart met betekenis
Many families from the Xuzhou countryside now live far from home, in larger cities or abroad. A map of Yaoji keeps the geometry of the hometown in view, and you can set the title in your own words, add a family name or a year, and adjust the coordinates line.
The pattern of roads and fields suits Blueprint or Noir especially well, though all five styles are available, including Paper and Sand. Download the HD files for $9, with six print sizes from 30×40 cm to 24×36″, or order a printed poster with an optional frame.
