Abakaliki is the capital of Ebonyi State in southeastern Nigeria. It grew from a local market and administrative town into a state capital after Ebonyi was created in 1996, and the map shows that growth. An older core of close streets sits at the centre, broad new roads and government areas surround it, and residential districts spread into the farmland.
The area is widely known for its rice. Abakaliki rice is recognised across Nigeria and grown in the low-lying fields around the town. The region also has a long history of salt production and of mining, particularly lead and zinc, which has shaped the local economy and settlement for generations.
