Achhībal lies in Anantnag district in the south of the Kashmir Valley, where the valley floor meets the lower slopes of the surrounding mountains. On a map the town is a compact cluster of lanes and houses. Orchards and fields spread across the flatter land, the hillside rises close by, and streams and irrigation channels thread through the landscape.
The town is best known for the Achabal garden, a Mughal garden associated with Empress Nur Jahan. It is laid out on a slope below a powerful natural spring, whose water is channelled down through terraces, cascades and fountains. The formal geometry of the garden stands out clearly from the organic pattern of the town around it.
