Aígio is one of the main towns of Achaea, on the northern Peloponnese coast. Its layout is shaped by a natural step in the land: the upper town sits on a terrace above the sea, while the harbour and lower streets lie along the shore below. Stairways and steep streets connect the two levels, a pattern that shows clearly on a map.
The Gulf of Corinth fills the northern side of the frame, with the mountains of Central Greece visible across the water on clear days. Aígio has long been a port for local produce, especially currants, and it lies in an area of notable seismic activity, having been struck by a significant earthquake in 1995.
