Akhnūr lies in the Jammu district, where the Chenab river leaves the Himalayan foothills and spreads out onto the plains. The river is the town's defining feature. Wide, braided channels run along its edge, with the town centre set on the bank. Roads lead toward Jammu and into the hills, and farmland stretches across the flat ground.
The town is known for Akhnoor Fort, which stands on the bank of the Chenab. Nearby, the archaeological site of Manda has been associated with the northernmost reach of the Harappan civilisation. Akhnūr's location near the border also gives it strategic importance.
