Ambanja lies in the Diana region of northern Madagascar, on the Sambirano River a short distance inland from the Mozambique Channel. On the map, the town forms a modest grid near the river, with a main road passing through and connecting it to the rest of the north.
The Sambirano valley is known for its fertile ground, and the land around the town is covered with plantations. The river winds past in loose curves, and smaller streams and tracks spread across the surrounding farmland. On a print, the river becomes the strongest natural line, bending beside the orderly streets.
