Arkalyk Map Poster & Print
Arkalyk lies in the south of Kostanay region in northern Kazakhstan, surrounded by open steppe. It was founded in the Soviet period around bauxite mining and was laid out according to a clear plan, with broad avenues, residential microdistricts and public buildings arranged in orderly blocks.
The town served for a time as the capital of Turgay region, and the surrounding steppe was used as a landing area for Soviet and later Russian crewed spacecraft returning from orbit. After the 1990s the population declined considerably, and parts of the town were left underused.
An Arkalyk map poster emphasises geometry: straight streets, rectangular blocks and the sharp edge where the town ends and the steppe begins. The emptiness around it is part of the picture and gives the design its calm, spare feel.
