Kyzylorda lies on the lower Syr Darya, the river that once fed the Aral Sea, and water shapes its map. The river bends past the city in wide loops. A network of irrigation canals fans out across the surrounding land, where rice has long been a major crop. The city itself is laid out mostly on a regular grid of broad streets and long blocks.
The Kokand Khanate founded the town as a fortress called Ak-Mechet in the early nineteenth century. Russian forces took it in 1853 and renamed it Perovsk. In the 1920s it briefly served as the capital of the Kazakh Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, before the seat moved to Almaty. Its present name is usually translated as red capital.
Beyond the city the land is flat and dry, and the Baikonur Cosmodrome lies in the same region, further along the Syr Darya.
