Atambua is the main town of Belu Regency in East Nusa Tenggara, on the Indonesian half of the island of Timor. It lies inland, close to the land border with Timor-Leste. The terrain around it is hilly and seasonally dry, and the town's roads follow the ground rather than a planned grid.
From above, the centre is a knot of short, winding streets around the main junctions. Arterial roads leave in several directions, toward the border crossing, the south coast and other towns in western Timor. Houses and gardens thin out along these routes into dry farmland and scrub, so the settlement has a star-like outline rather than a solid block.
Atambua is also the seat of a Catholic diocese, which reflects the religious make-up of this part of Indonesia. An Atambua map poster presents a frontier town without making it dramatic.
