Auburn Hills lies in Oakland County, north of Detroit, and its map reads very differently from a classic grid town. Interstate 75 cuts diagonally through, with large interchanges shaping the land around them. Between the main roads sit office campuses, curving subdivision streets, retail loops and patches of woodland. The Clinton River threads through the city, adding a soft line to a mostly engineered plan.
