Avon Lake lies on the southern shore of Lake Erie, west of Cleveland in Lorain County. The lake dominates any map of the city, forming a long, almost straight northern boundary. Residential streets run inland from the shore, lakefront lots line the water, and a few main roads parallel the coast before meeting the north–south routes that lead toward the interstate.
Behind the shoreline, the city spreads out in a mostly suburban pattern: older neighbourhoods near the lake, newer subdivisions with curving streets and cul-de-sacs further south. Parks and school grounds break up the housing. An industrial site on the shore, long associated with power generation, is one of the few large non-residential areas.
