Awati lies on the edge of the Tarim Basin in southern Xinjiang, where snowmelt from the surrounding mountains feeds a chain of oases around the Taklamakan Desert. From above, it is easy to see where water reaches and where it stops. Irrigated land forms a patchwork of fields and channels, and beyond it the desert begins almost abruptly.
Oasis towns in this region follow a familiar logic. Canals branch from the rivers and divide into smaller ditches, and roads, often lined with poplars, run alongside them.
