Babenhausen lies in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district of southern Hesse, between Darmstadt and Aschaffenburg. From above, the old town is easy to find. It is a compact, roughly oval core of narrow streets, still partly enclosed by the line of its former walls, with the castle at one edge and the church near the centre.
The Gersprenz river flows past the town through a flat, green valley, and later neighbourhoods have grown up beyond the old core in looser streets and cul-de-sacs. Large former military barracks on the edge of town, once used by the US Army, form another distinct block on the map and have since been redeveloped for new uses.
