Binjai lies a short distance west of Medan, on the main route toward Aceh, and much of its street pattern hangs off that road. The centre is a compact grid of shops and market streets; outward from it, neighbourhoods thin into kampung lanes, rice fields and plantation land. Rivers cross the city on their way down from the highlands, adding winding lines to the map.
The city is widely known in Indonesia for its rambutan, and the fruit has become part of its identity, giving Binjai the nickname Kota Rambutan.
