Tebingtinggi is in North Sumatra, on the main road between Medan and Pematangsiantar. It is a compact town that is completely surrounded by Serdang Bedagai Regency. On a map the urban area forms a fairly tight shape, with the Padang River winding through it and a tight network of streets on either side.
Around the edges of the town, the land is taken up by plantations, mainly oil palm and rubber. They appear as large blocks crossed by regular estate roads. A railway line passes through the town, and main roads leave it in several directions, linking it to the coast and to the highlands. This has long made Tebingtinggi a crossroads town for the region.
