Bodø lies just north of the Arctic Circle in Nordland, on a peninsula reaching into the Norwegian Sea. The city centre is compact and faces a harbour sheltered by small islands, while mountains rise across the water to the north and east.
Much of the centre was destroyed by bombing in 1940 and rebuilt in the following decades, which explains its regular, modern street pattern. Nearby lies Saltstraumen, often described as the strongest tidal current in the world. In 2024 Bodø was a European Capital of Culture, and its football club, FK Bodø/Glimt, is known across Europe.
