Buchanan is the capital of Grand Bassa County and one of the larger cities on Liberia's coast, lying south-east of Monrovia along the Atlantic. From above, the town stretches along the shoreline. A straight edge of beach and surf runs on one side, and a looser pattern of streets, compounds and green ground extends inland.
The port defines its character. Iron ore mined in the Nimba region in the north travels to Buchanan for export on a railway of more than 250 kilometres. The line was first built in the 1960s and later restored. On the map the railway arrives as a single steady line and ends at breakwaters and quays that reach into the sea.
