Soubré lies in southwestern Ivory Coast on the Sassandra River, one of the country's major rivers, which flows south from here toward the Atlantic. The town sits on the river in rolling, forested country. On a map the water is the defining line: a broad, curving channel with the streets gathered beside it.
Just outside the town, the Soubré hydroelectric dam, completed in 2017 at the Nawa Falls, is one of the largest power stations in Ivory Coast. The dam and its reservoir have changed the shape of the river nearby. They add a wider expanse of water to the map and a straight concrete line across the current.
