Bürstadt is in southern Hesse, in the Hessian Ried, the low, flat land on the east side of the Upper Rhine plain. The Rhine itself runs a short distance to the west, with Worms on the far bank, and Mannheim lies to the south. From above, the town has a compact centre with residential areas around it and a railway line passing through, all surrounded by large, level fields.
The Ried has long been farming country, with wide, open fields and a landscape shaped by old river channels and drainage. Bürstadt is a local centre in the Bergstraße district, and its position within reach of Mannheim, Worms and Darmstadt makes it part of a larger metropolitan region while keeping a small-town scale.
