Bytom is one of the oldest towns in Upper Silesia and part of the large urban region around Katowice. On the map, its compact medieval centre with a rectangular market square sits at the heart of a dense network of streets.
For more than a century, coal mining shaped the town. Mines, spoil heaps and railway lines surround the centre, and underground workings caused subsidence that damaged many buildings over the years. Today much of that industrial landscape is being reclaimed.
