Częstochowa lies on the upper Warta River in southern Poland, and its map is organised around one unmistakable line. The Aleja Najświętszej Maryi Panny, a broad tree-lined avenue, runs from the old town area near the river straight west toward the hill of Jasna Góra. Along this axis the city centre developed, with grids of streets branching north and south from it.
At the western end, the Jasna Góra monastery sits on its rise, surrounded by walls and a park, a compact shape that closes the avenue like a full stop. East of the centre, the Warta winds through the city in a narrow green corridor. Industrial districts, housing estates and railway lines fill out the rest of the map, giving it a busier outer ring.
Jasna Góra holds the icon of the Black Madonna, one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Central Europe, and every summer thousands of pilgrims arrive on foot from across Poland, especially for the August feast of the Assumption.
