Cacém lies in the municipality of Sintra, on the line of towns that grew along the railway running west from Lisbon. On the map it is a tightly packed urban area where apartment blocks fill most of the ground, broken up by the curve of the rail line, a few main roads and the green strips that follow the local stream valley.
Most of the town was built in the second half of the twentieth century, when commuter growth turned farmland outside the capital into dense suburbs. That shows in the layout: blocks are arranged in clusters rather than a single grid, each following the slope of the ground. The IC19 highway passes nearby, connecting the area with Lisbon and Sintra.
