Cagliari faces the Gulf of Angels on Sardinia's south coast, and the map shows a city built around high ground and water. The Castello quarter sits on a limestone hill above the harbour, surrounded by walls and bastions, and other districts spread out across the lower slopes and flat land around it.
East of the centre, the Molentargius salt ponds form a large wetland where flamingos nest, and beyond them Poetto beach runs for several kilometres along the gulf. The rocky headland of the Sella del Diavolo closes the view at the end of the beach. The Bastione di Saint Remy links the Castello to the lower city.

The salt ponds and lagoons east of the city form large geometric shapes of water. They are home to flamingos and make an open space inside the urban area.
Poetto and the headland
A long beach runs along the gulf to the rocky Sella del Diavolo. The smooth curve of sand gives the southern edge of the print a calm line.
