Carballo is the main town of the Bergantiños area in the province of A Coruña. The map shows a compact center on the banks of the Anllóns river. Streets fan out towards newer districts, and the countryside beyond is broken into the small, irregular fields and scattered hamlets typical of rural Galicia. To the west, the municipality reaches the Atlantic.
The town has a long tradition as a spa. Its thermal spring, the balneario beside the river, has drawn visitors for centuries. Carballo's municipal coastline, near the start of the Costa da Morte, includes long sandy beaches such as Razo and Baldaio, known for surfing and wide dunes.
