Carpi lies on the flat Po plain north of Modena, and its map is very tidy. The historic centre forms a compact, roughly rectangular core, and the line of its former walls survives as a ring of avenues. Outside that ring, twentieth-century neighbourhoods and industrial zones spread over the level farmland in regular blocks.
At the heart of the old town is Piazza dei Martiri, a long, wide rectangle counted among the largest squares in Italy. One side is lined by a long arcade, and across it stands the castle of the Pio family, who ruled Carpi during the Renaissance. The town later became known for its knitwear and textile industry, which shaped much of its modern growth.

The route of the old fortifications is now a loop of avenues around the historic core, drawing a clear boundary between the medieval town and later growth.
