Changshouhu takes its name from Changshou Lake, a large reservoir in Chongqing's Changshou District, northeast of the city's central area. The lake was created in the mid-twentieth century by damming a river valley, and the flooded hills now form a scatter of islands and peninsulas. From above, the water fills the frame in an intricate, branching shape.
The name means Longevity Lake, and the area is known as a scenic destination as well as a place to live. The town's streets occupy land along the shore, with roads following the edge of the water and the contours of the hills. Wooded slopes and farmland surround the lake, typical of the hill country around Chongqing.
