Chengjiang lies in the north-western part of Chongqing municipality, in the Beibei area, where the Jialing River winds through steep, wooded hills on its way to the city centre. On a map the town is shaped by this terrain: streets bend along contours, and building blocks fit into the narrow flat land between slopes and water.
