Chongxing lies in the Ningxia region of north-western China, on the plain formed by the Yellow River. This is dry country, and the plain owes its farmland to irrigation: for many centuries, water has been led from the river through canals into the fields. From above, that history shows as long, straight channels and a regular pattern of rectangular plots.
The settlement itself appears as a compact area of streets and blocks within this agricultural grid, linked by roads to nearby towns and to the larger cities of the region.
