Cosenza lies in northern Calabria, where the Busento River flows into the Crati. The old town climbs a steep hill above the confluence, its narrow streets winding up toward the castle at the top. From above, this part of the city looks dense and irregular, shaped entirely by the slope.
Across the river, the modern city spreads north over flatter ground in a more regular grid. Its main axis, Corso Mazzini, is a long pedestrian street lined with outdoor sculptures. The two rivers divide old and new, and bridges link them, so the map reads as two distinct halves meeting at the water.
A well-known legend says the Visigothic king Alaric was buried with his treasure in the bed of the Busento in 410. The University of Calabria lies just outside the city. A Cosenza map poster shows the clear contrast between the medieval hill and the newer valley city.
