Delano is in the southern San Joaquin Valley, in Kern County, California. The valley floor is flat and intensively farmed, so from above the city is a neat street grid set within a much larger grid of vineyards and orchards stretching to the edges of the frame.
State Route 99 and the railway run through the city side by side, north to south, dividing it into east and west halves. Streets meet at right angles, and the section lines of the surrounding farmland continue the same geometry for miles in every direction.
The city is best known for the Delano grape strike, which began in 1965 and became a turning point for farmworkers' rights in the United States. A Delano map poster connects that history to the land itself, a grid of streets and vineyards shaped by agriculture.
