Dīdwāna lies in the semi-arid country of central Rajasthan, on the eastern fringe of the Thar. Its best-known feature is the salt lake next to the town, a flat, pale basin that has been worked for salt for generations. On a map the lake reads as a large empty shape, and the town sits compactly beside it.
The old core is a knot of narrow, irregular lanes, typical of Rajasthani market towns that grew without a planned grid. Around it, newer roads run out straight across the open plain towards neighbouring towns and villages. Since 2023 Dīdwāna has been one of the two headquarters of the new Didwana-Kuchaman district.
