Dobrich is the main city of Bulgaria's north-eastern Dobruja region. This wide, mostly flat grain-growing plateau stretches toward the Black Sea coast and the Romanian border. From above, the city looks almost like a diagram of a regional hub. It has a compact centre, rings of housing blocks and industrial estates, and roads leading out in several directions to smaller towns.
For part of the twentieth century the city was called Tolbukhin, before it took back its historic name. One well-known feature of its centre is the Old Dobrich ethnographic complex, a reconstructed quarter of craft workshops. Around the core, large residential estates and green strips form clear shapes on the map.
