Dereham, often called East Dereham, sits near the geographic centre of Norfolk. Its map has the classic shape of an English market town: a compact historic core where several roads meet, a long market place, and newer housing estates spreading outward in every direction. The A47 passes to the south as a bypass, drawing a clean curve along one edge of the town.
At the heart of the old town stands the church of St Nicholas, notable for a bell tower that stands apart from the main building. Beside the churchyard is St Withburga's Well, associated with the Saxon abbess who founded a religious house here.
