El Dorado is the seat of Union County in southern Arkansas, near the Louisiana border. The map is organised around a classic downtown: a courthouse square at the centre, with a grid of streets extending in every direction. Farther out, the grid gives way to curving residential streets, rail lines and the pine forests of the region.
The city changed dramatically in 1921, when an oil strike nearby set off a boom that brought thousands of people almost overnight. Much of downtown, including the 1928 Union County Courthouse, dates from those prosperous years. El Dorado remains home to Murphy Oil, and the Murphy Arts District has brought new life to the historic centre.

Boom-era downtown
The compact blocks around the square were largely built during the 1920s oil boom, and they form the densest and most regular part of the city.

Railway lines pass through town at angles to the grid, a reminder of the transport network that carried oil and timber out of south Arkansas.
