Esposende lies on the Atlantic coast of northern Portugal in the Braga district, at the mouth of the Cávado River. The estuary shapes its map. The river widens as it approaches the sea, with sandbars and channels changing shape at its mouth, and the town sits on its northern bank facing the ocean.
South of the river, the village of Fão and the pine woods of Ofir stretch along the coast. Much of the shoreline is protected as part of the Litoral Norte Natural Park, with dunes and beaches running for long distances. On the map these areas appear as long bands of open space along the water.
