Fana lies in the Koulikoro Region of Mali, on the main road that links Bamako with Ségou and the country's interior. The highway is the town's backbone, and from above the settlement clearly grows along and around it. Side streets branch off at intervals into residential quarters, forming a loose grid of compounds and lanes.
The surrounding landscape is Sahelian savanna, flat and open, with scattered trees and cultivated fields. The region is agricultural, and cotton is among the crops grown in this part of Mali.
