Fröndenberg lies in the Unna district of North Rhine-Westphalia, on the upper Ruhr, where the river winds through a green valley before reaching the industrial cities further west. On the map, the town stretches along the river's northern side, with streets climbing the slope and wooded hills rising to the south.
The town grew around a Cistercian convent founded in the thirteenth century, later a collegiate foundation for noblewomen, and its church still stands above the valley. Fröndenberg also has a strong metalworking tradition, particularly chain-making, which is recorded in a local museum.
