Fürstenwalde lies in eastern Brandenburg, on the River Spree, roughly midway between Berlin and Frankfurt an der Oder. The river curves through the town, and on a map it forms the main natural feature, with the old centre on its bank and newer districts spreading north and south.
The town was for a time the seat of the Bishops of Lebus, and St. Mary's Cathedral, the Dom St. Marien, remains its best-known building, restored after heavy damage in the Second World War. Around it, the historic centre keeps a compact medieval layout of short streets and a market square.
