The Elbe defines Magdeburg. The river runs north through the city and splits into several arms, leaving islands between them. The largest of these holds the Rotehorn city park. On the west bank, the cathedral and the historic centre sit on higher ground above the water. The eastern districts spread out on the far side of the bridges.
Magdeburg was one of Otto the Great's favourite residences, and he is buried in its Gothic cathedral, among the oldest in Germany. North of the city, the Mittelland Canal crosses the Elbe on the Magdeburg Water Bridge, one of the longest navigable aqueducts in Europe. Near the cathedral stands the Green Citadel, a late Hundertwasser building with its unmistakable wavy façade.

The Gothic cathedral stands on the west bank above the river. It anchors the historic centre where Otto the Great is buried.
