Gaogou is a town in Lianshui County, Huai'an, in northern Jiangsu. It lies on the broad, low plain of the Huai River region, where the land is almost perfectly flat and criss-crossed by canals, drainage channels and straight roads. The map reflects this: long, clean lines dividing the land into large rectangles.
The town centre is a compact cluster of streets, with newer residential and industrial areas growing out along the main roads. Waterways cut through and around the built-up area, and bridges carry roads across them at regular intervals. Beyond the town, fields and villages continue in an orderly pattern to the horizon.
A Gaogou map poster shows a place shaped by water management and agriculture. The town is also known in China for its long tradition of liquor distilling, with Gaogou baijiu among the country's recognised names.
